Bandits had better stay away from Zamfara and contiguous states as a Police Joint Intervention Force is waging a ruthless campaign against them and in one operation on Thursday, neutralised 104 of them.
Eighty five others were arrested.
The special force, comprising counter-terrorism unit, mobile force, Federal SARS and with air support, destroyed 50 hideouts of the bandits in five camps and also recovered from them over 250 heads of cattle and 109 sheep.
However, one policeman, yet to be identified, died during the counter-assault. Twelve others were wounded
A police statement by Jimoh Moshood, acting deputy commissioner said the Inspector General of Police, Idris has deployed the DIG Operation to take control of the continuous operation in the state to rout out banditry.
Three surveillance helicopters are assisting the police mission.
The Police Joint Operation Team had run into an ambush laid by the bandits in the evening of 29 November at Mahanga Forest in Birnin Mogaji.
The police fired back and killed them mercilessly.
Zamfara had been in the news as a nest of bandits, kidnappers and cattle rustlers. The criminals had also been killing many innocent villagers.
Thus the Inspector General of Police on 9 November, 2018, deployed to the state the Police Joint Intervention Team of about 1000 Police personnel comprising the Seven Units of Police Mobile Force (PMF) headed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), Police Anti-Bomb (EOD) Squad, and conventional Policemen.
Police spokesman Jimoh Moshood said the Team recorded significant progress in the arrest of more than 85 suspects and the recovery of 27 AK47 Rifles and 52 locally fabricated rifles and other dangerous weapons.
Now, the DIG, Department of Operation and the Police Joint Team have been mandated to also coordinate the Commissioner of Police, Zamfara State and personnel of the Command to sustain and restore lasting peace throughout Zamfara State.

No fewer than 113 inmates have escaped from a prison in Indonesia’s Aceh province after breaking through the doors with barbells and other crude weapons, an official said on Friday.
“After evening prayers on Thursday, the prisoners destroyed doors leading to Banda Aceh prison’s hall and then into the guest area,’’ Meurah Budiman, the head of the provincial justice department, said.
Budiman said that guards tried to stop the inmates breaking out from there but were overpowered.
“No fewer than 26 of the escapees have since been recaptured,’’ he said.
Report says Indonesian prisons are overcrowded and understaffed; meanwhile, jailbreaks are not uncommon.

Nigeria has started trial testing of the rollout plan of 5G networks with the 26GHz, 38GHz and 42GHz spectrum bands beginning with the Eko Atlantic Project
The country to regulatory agency, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), would be ready to roll out 5G by 2020.
NCC said in Abuja on Thursday during a collaborative meeting with GSMA for 5G rollout in Nigeria.
The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, said 5G broadband data will drive connectivity and allow humans to interact with connected devices to check their health status and remotely control home appliances without physical contact.
Danbatta acknowledged the deficit in infrastructure rollout and spectrum availability in the country but added that the NCC was already working to address the challenges.
He said NCC would begin with the available 26GHz, 38GHz and 42GHz to drive 5G rollout in the country.
Danbatta said, “NCC is already working on the three key factors that will drive 5G deployments, which include infrastructure, spectrum and regulation ahead of the 2020 rollout date.
“We will rely on existing policies and regulation and still come up with additional policies and regulation that will address any hiccups.”
Also speaking, the Head, sub-Saharan Africa for GSMA, Mr. Akinwale Goodluck, said although Nigeria still operates 2G and 4G networks, they will gradually give way for 5G as the demand for 5G increases among the millennial, who are the digital natives.
GSMA used the occasion of the collaborative meeting to launch its latest report, which focused on ‘Spotlight on Nigeria: Delivering a Digital Future.’

The Independent Corruption Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on Wednesday re-arraigned a former Inspector-General of Police, Sunday Ehindero, and a former Commissioner of Police, John Obaniyi, over alleged N16.4 million fraud.

The accused were again arraigned on a 10-count amended charge before an FCT High Court sitting at Apo.

The charge borders on conspiracy, fraud and making false statement.

The former police chiefs, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Mr O.G. Iwuagwu, told the court that the accused committed the offences from May 2006 to November 2006.

He said that the duo conspired and used their positions to place N500 million in two fixed deposit accounts.

Iwuagwu said that the money was part of N557,995,065.00 donated by the Bayelsa Government to the Nigeria Police for purchase of arms and ammunition.

The prosecutor said that the N500 million placed in fixed deposits yielded an interest of N16, 412, 315.06.

Police high command have transferred officers of the Counter Terrorism Unit(CTU) from Imo State command who protested over accommodation and ill-treatment by police authorities to Borno state to fight against Boko Haram insurgents.

No fewer than 100 police officers penultimate weekend took to the streets to protest their planned eviction from their new base in Owerri by their commander, Usman Muhammed Taaba without provision for alternative accommodation.

Daily Times reports that the affected officers, were fully armed and masked, marched in their dozens in front of their base on old Orlu Road Secretariat, Owerri, where they barricaded the highway with burning tyres, shooting sporadically into the air and forcing motorists nearby to scamper to safety.

It was gathered that the officers were being forced to relocate from their base to the new Egbeada Market to occupy the shops upstairs with their families while traders use the ground floor even without toilet and bathroom facilities, an arrangement they vehemently rejected.

A week after the demonstration, sources at the CTU confided on reporters in Owerri that about 60 personnel were given punitive transfers to Maiduguri while some others were posted to other states in the North.

“As I’m talking to you now, some of us are already moving with the faith that we would survive the onslaught of Boko Haram. “That is Nigerian system for you. Instead of them to look into the matter for which we protested, they turned round to give us death penalty.

“We’re working under very excruciating conditions and our commander is only interested in the weekly returns we make for him every Monday while he stays in the hotel in Owerri.

“He doesn’t know whether we survive or not. The worst thing is if you tell him that there was no return, he will order for withdrawals to be made from your ATM and he will happily collect it.

“We were only asking that we should not be forcefully ejected from our base without a provision for an alternative arrangement”, One of the affected officers, lamented.

When contacted the state police public relations officer, Orlando Ikeokwu for reactions, he refused to respond to calls and text messages sent to him.

South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa

South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa has signed into law the national minimum wage bill.

The development came at a time Nigerian workers are yet to get total commitment to N30,000 from federal and state governments.

Reuters reports that Ramaphosa’s office said on Monday that the signing was part of efforts by the government to tackle wage inequality in Africa’s most industrialized economy.

The National Minimum Wage Act sets South Africa’s minimum wage at 20 rands ($1.45) per hour, equal to 3,500 rands per month (N126,000).

The law will come into force on a date to be determined by Ramaphosa, the presidency said.

Supporters of the minimum wage say it will reduce inequality and stimulate economic growth as workers spend more.

Thousands of union members protested against the proposed minimum wage in April.

Isiaka Adegboyega Oyetola will be sworn in today as the new governor of Osun state, succeeding Rauf Aregbesola, who has completed an eighth-year tenure.
Oyetola is the fifth civilian governor of the state, created in August 1991. Others before him were Isiaka Adeleke, who ruled between 1992 and 1993, Chief Bisi Akande,(1999-2003), Olagunsoye Oyinlola(2003-2010) and Rauf Aregbesola(2010-2018).
The swearing in ceremony will take place at the Osogbo Township Stadium today, with the former governor retiring to Ilesa, his hometown.
Oyetola, the 64 year-old new governor won the post with the smallest margin ever in Nigeria’s governorship elections, defeating the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke, after a rerun with 482 votes.
Adeleke is disputing the verdict at the election tribunal.
The election held on 22 September went into a rerun in some seven polling units. The PDP candidate had led the APC candidate with 353 votes before the rerun.
The difference was wiped out in the rerun, with the Social Democratic Party candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore, who was the second runner up in the first election, going into alliance with the APC.
The alliance was the game changer as Omisore gave the APC candidate, the votes needed in Ile-Ife to wipe out the PDP candidate’s lead.
Oyetola was born in Iragbiji in Boripe LGA of Osun State on 29 September 1954.
He went to Ifeoluwa Grammar School in Osogbo for his secondary education which he completed in 1972
He was a graduate of University of Lagos and had a B.Sc (Hons) Insurance in 1978 and MBA in Finance in 1990.
He is also an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute, London and Nigeria and a Member of the Nigerian Institute of Management.
He started his Insurance Career with Leadway Assurance Company after his NYSC in Maiduguri in 1980 as an Assistant Manager and rose to the position of Area Manager, Control Office, Lagos.
He worked at Crusader Insurance as Underwriting Manager, Corporate Alliance Insurance as Controller Technical before he left to set up Silvertrust Insurance Brokers in 1990. He was on the Board of many companies.
He was the Executive Vice Chairman of Paragon Group of Companies with interest in Oil and Gas, Real Estate, Stock Broking etc. until his appointment as the Chief of Staff to the Governor of the State of Osun.
He is happily married and has children.
Oyetola will be inheriting a load of economic and financial problems in the state, with the state owing workers salaries and pensions to retirees. However, junior workers were consistently paid.
The new governor is expected to deploy his financial skills to overcome the problems.

A scientist claims he helped create the world’s first genetically-modified babies during laboratory work in China.
The DNA of twin girls was altered with a powerful new tool capable of rewriting the very blueprint of life, researcher Dr He Jiankui says.
He said his goal was not to cure or prevent an inherited disease, but to try to bestow a trait that few people naturally have – an ability to resist possible future infection with HIV, the AIDS virus.
However, many mainstream scientists think it is too unsafe to try, and this kind of gene editing is banned in Britain and in the United States because the DNA changes can pass to future generations and risks harming other genes.
The researcher, He Jiankui of Shenzhen, said he altered embryos for seven couples during fertility treatments, with one pregnancy resulting thus far.
The Researcher, Dr He Jiankui
There is no independent confirmation of Mr He’s claim, and it has not been published in a journal, where it would be vetted by other experts.
He unveiled his research on Monday in Hong Kong to one of the organisers of an international conference on gene editing that is set to begin on Tuesday.
“I feel a strong responsibility that it’s not just to make a first, but also make it an example,” Mr He told the AP.
“Society will decide what to do next” in terms of allowing or forbidding such science, he added.
Some scientists were astounded to hear of the claim and strongly condemned it.
It is “unconscionable … an experiment on human beings that is not morally or ethically defensible”, said Dr Kiran Musunuru, a University of Pennsylvania gene editing expert and editor of a genetics journal.
Editing sperm, eggs or embryos is different – the changes can be inherited. China outlaws human cloning but not specifically gene editing.
Mr He studied at Rice and Stanford universities in the US before returning to his homeland to open a lab at Southern University of Science and Technology of China in Shenzhen, where he also has two genetics companies.
The US scientist who worked with him on this project after Mr He returned to China was physics and bioengineering professor Michael Deem, who was his adviser at Rice in Houston.
The Chinese researcher said he practised editing mice, monkey and human embryos in the lab for several years and has applied for patents on his methods.
He said he chose embryo gene editing for HIV because these infections were a big problem in China. He sought to disable a gene called CCR5 that forms a protein doorway that allows HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, to enter a cell.
All of the men in the project had HIV and all of the women did not, but the gene editing was not aimed at preventing the small risk of transmission, Mr He said.
Instead, the appeal was to offer couples affected by HIV a chance to have a child that might be protected from a similar fate.
He recruited couples through a Beijing-based AIDS advocacy group called Baihualin.
He said the gene editing occurred during IVF, or lab dish fertilisation.
First, sperm was “washed” to separate it from semen, the fluid where HIV can lurk.
A single sperm was placed into a single egg to create an embryo. Then the gene editing tool was used.
When the embryos were three to five days old, a few cells were removed and checked for editing. Couples could choose whether to use edited or unedited embryos for pregnancy attempts. Eleven embryos were used in six attempts before the twin pregnancy was achieved, Mr He said.
Tests suggest that one of the twins, born this month, had both copies of the intended gene altered and the other twin had just one altered, with no evidence of harm to other genes, Mr He said. People with one copy can still get HIV.
Several scientists reviewed materials that Mr He provided to the AP and said tests so far were insufficient to draw conclusions.
“I believe this is going to help the families and their children,” said Mr He. If it causes unwanted side effects or harm, “I would feel the same pain as they do and it’s going to be my own responsibility”, he added.

He said: “President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to declare the COAS Annual Conference on Nov. 28, 2018 at the Conference Hall CGH in Maiduguri, Borno state.
“The conference was earlier scheduled to take place from 26 -28 November 2018 in Benin, Edo state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that arrangements had been completed by Edo State Government to host President Buhari on Nov. 27 where he was billed to inaugurate the Edo-Azura Power Plant and grace the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Annual Conference.
NAN gathered that the shifting of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Annual Conference from Benin City to Maiduguri might not be unconnected with the killing of Nigerian soldiers at Metele, a remote village bordering Nigeria and Chad.

NAN learnt that President Buhari would use the opportunity of the COAS conference to address the Nigerian soldiers at the battlefields to further boost their morale.
It would be recalled that President Buhari had on Sunday presided over a meeting of security chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, as part of the ongoing efforts to engage military and intelligence community towards addressing Boko Haram insurgency.
In a tweet in Abuja on Sunday, the President’s aide on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, said all the service chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, Idris Ibrahim and the Director-General of the Department of State Service (DSS), Yusuf Bichi were part of the meeting.
“All the Service Chiefs, I-G of Police and DG of DSS were at the State House this morning. As President Buhari said (Saturday) yesterday, in the coming days, he will be engaging the Military and Intelligence Chiefs in extensive discussions on the next steps we shall be taking,’’ Ahmad said in the tweet.
President Buhari had pledged on Saturday to ensure that the loopholes, which led to the fatalities are blocked once and for all.
On 18 November, the Al Barnawi faction of Boko Haram attack the 157 Task Force Battalion based at Metele in northern part of Borno state, killing scores of Nigerian troops.
The military authorities are yet to give the specific number of casualties.
Buhari in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu in Abuja on Saturday, reiterated his administration’s commitment to the security of military personnel and other citizens.
“No responsible Commander-in-Chief would rest on his oars or fold his hands to allow terrorists to endanger the lives of military personnel and other citizens”, Shehu quoted the president as saying.
“Our loyal forces have proved their strength over the terrorists and we are ready to give them all the needed support, in terms of equipment and manpower, to succeed in ending the renewed threat.
“In the coming days, I am engaging the military and Intelligence Chiefs in extensive discussions on the next steps we shall be taking.”
The President noted that fighting terrorism had taken a global dimension, which necessitated international collaboration among states facing similar security challenges.
He, therefore, reassured Nigerians of his continued commitment to their security and of his efforts to sustain the momentum in the previous significant successes recorded against the terrorists.
The president, however, advised Nigerians against making a political capital out of the national tragedy, saying “members of the armed forces are one family, commonly committed to the security and safety of all Nigerians.’’
