The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Uche Secondus, has demanded for a public apology and the sum of N1.5billion as compensation, following the list of alleged looters revealed by the Federal Government.

Mr Secondus made the demand on Saturday in a statement by his media aide, Ike Abonyi, one day after the Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Lai Mohammed, said the PDP chairman was among those who allegedly looted the nation’s treasury.
According to the list released, Secondus was alleged to have received the sum of N200million from the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) on February 19, 2015.

The PDP National Chairman, however, gave the minister 48 hours to withdraw the statement against him and tender a public apology, or face litigation.

He gave the ultimatum through his lawyer, Mr Emeka Etiaba, in a letter dated March 31, 2018 and titled “Re: Publication of False and Defamatory Statement Against Prince Uche Secondus, The National Chairman of The Peoples Democratic Party: Demand for Retraction, Apology and Payment Of Damages.”

The lawyer noted that the statement has damaged the image of his client, claiming Secondus has been “humiliated, castigated and vilified by many” as a result of the publication.

He stated that if the minister fails to meet their demands after 48 hours, “We shall within 72 hours from today, proceed to a court of competent jurisdiction to ventilate our clients right under the law and shall further seek the protection of the court against you.”

Mr Mohammed had told reporters on Friday in Lagos that the decision to reveal the list was prompted by the PDP’s call to the government to publish the names of those that alleged looted Nigeria’s treasury.

He had also described the development as “a tip of the iceberg”, noting that the APC has not fabricated the list as some of those indicted currently have cases in court.

Also on the list are former PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr Olisa Metuh, and an erstwhile aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Dudafa Waripamo-Owei, among others.

A Philippine man, Ruben Enaje, who has been nailed to a cross every Easter for the past 32 years in a Good Friday re-enactment of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion says he no longer feels any pain from his wounds.
Enaje, 58, again portrayed Christ on Friday in the traditional religious rite in Cutud village, about 76 km (47 miles) from the capital Manila.
“In the past, I went home injured and limping, but this year I feel so great,” Enaje said after the ritual held under a sweltering sun.
He said he believed his strong Catholic faith helped him avoid pain.
“I feel like he is telling me ‘go ahead, keep it up’,” he said, referring to God.
Easter is a festival marking the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.
About 80 percent of the 105 million people in the Philippines, a former Spanish colony, are Catholic.
Enaje said he felt strong enough to perform in two or three more crucifixions, until he turns 60.
Enaje was among three devotees nailed to wooden crosses in the village on Friday, including a woman taking part for the seventh time.
Actors wearing Roman soldier costumes attached the devotees to crosses by hammering two-inch nails soaked in alcohol through their hands and feet and hoisted them up in a field packed with domestic and foreign tourists.
The Catholic Church in the Philippines tolerates the ritual but says it does not support such gory displays of devotion, describing them as a “misinterpretation of faith”.
Many Catholics in the Philippines perform religious acts of penance during the Holy Week at Easter as a form of worship and supplication.
Some believe penance cleanses sins, cures illnesses and even leads to wishes coming true. LR News

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Arnold Schwarzenegger has undergone heart surgery in Los Angeles and reports say he is in high spirits.
The Austrian-American film star and former California governor, 70, had a scheduled procedure to replace a valve at Cedars-Sinai hospital on Thursday.
The device was installed to repair a defective aortic valve in 1997. Thursday’s operation lasted several hours, TMZ website reports.
Schwarzenegger is said to be recovering well and reportedly commented after waking from surgery: “I’m back.”
His spokesman, Daniel Ketchell, said that Schwarzenegger was “in good spirits”.
Responding to the news, Austria’s Chancellor Sebastian Kurz wished his “friend” well in a tweet, adding: “I look forward to seeing you again.”
Schwarzenegger is best known as the hardman of cult movies such as the Terminator and Conan the Barbarian.
He served two terms as California governor from 2003 to 2011 before returning to acting in The Expendables.
In May last year, Schwarzenegger was honoured in France with the Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur, the country’s most prestigious medal, for his environmental work.

An out-of-control Chinese space laboratory, Tiangong-1 that will plunge back to Earth in the coming days is unlikely to cause any damage, Chinese authorities say, but will offer instead a “splendid” show akin to a meteor shower.
The Chinese assurances came amidst anxieties about where the 8618.255 kg craft will make its landing.
The concern is expressed by the US-based Aerospace Corporation over possible exposure by humans to hydrazine, the deadly chemicals, used as rocket fuel. It is cancerous and may cause liver and nerve damage, the agency said.
But there is “no need for people to worry”, the China Manned Space Engineering Office (CMSEO) said on its WeChat social media account.
Such falling spacecraft do “not crash into the Earth fiercely like in sci-fi movies, but turn into a splendid (meteor shower) and move across the beautiful starry sky as they race towards the Earth”, it said.
China’s space agency said on Thursday that the nearly eight-tonne Tiangong-1 will re-enter the atmosphere some time between Saturday and Monday. The European Space Agency has a smaller window between midday Saturday and early Sunday afternoon GMT time.
The lab was placed in orbit in September 2011 and had been slated for a controlled re-entry, but it ceased functioning in March 2016 and space enthusiasts have been bracing for its fiery return.
Beijing sees its multi-billion-dollar space programme as a symbol of the country’s rise. It plans to send a manned mission to the moon in the future.
China sent another lab into orbit, the Tiangong-2, in September 2016 and hopes to turn it into a crewed space station by 2022.
Experts have downplayed any concerns about the Tiangong-1 causing any damage when it hurtles back to Earth, with the ESA noting that nearly 6,000 uncontrolled re-entries of large objects have occurred over the past 60 years without harming anyone.
The CMSEO said the probability of someone being hit by a meteorite of more than 200 grammes is one in 700 million.
During the uncontrolled re-entry, atmospheric drag will rip away solar arrays, antennas and other external components at an altitude of around 100 kilometres, according to the Chinese space office.
The intensifying heat and friction will cause the main structure to burn or blow up, and it should disintegrate at an altitude of around 80 kilometres, it said.
Most fragments will dissipate in the air and a small amount of debris will fall relatively slowly before landing, most likely in the ocean, which covers more than 70 percent of the Earth’s surface.
Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, estimates that the Tiangong-1 is the 50th most massive uncontrolled re-entry of an object since 1957.
“Much bigger things have come down with no casualties,” McDowell told AFP.
“This thing is like a small plane crash,” he said, adding that the trail of debris will scatter pieces several hundred kilometres apart.
At an altitude of 60-70 kilometres, debris will begin to turn into “a series of fireballs”, which is when people on the ground will “see a spectacular show,” he said.

The Federal Government has released a list of some of those who have allegedly looted the nation’s treasury.

The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, released the list during a press conference in Lagos on Friday.

Mohammed said the individuals include officials in the past government.

The names in the list revealed by the Federal Government include PDP chieftains who are currently being tried for corruption and financial crimes.

“The PDP has challenged us to name the looters under their watch. They said they did not loot the treasury. Well, I am sure they know that the treasury was looted dry under their watch. Yet they decided to grandstand. This shows the hollowness of their apology,” Mohammed said as he released the names.

Find the list below and the allegations against them by the Federal Government…

   PDP Chairman Uche Secondus.

Allegation: On the 19th of Feb 2015, he took N200 million only from the office of the NSA.

Former PDP Financial Secretary.

Allegation: On the 24th of Oct 2014, he took N600 million only from the office of former NSA.

Former National Publicity Secretary Olisah Metuh.

On trial for allegedly collecting N1.4bn from the office of former NSA.

Dr Raymond Dokpesi, Chairman of DAAR Communications.

On trial for allegedly taking N2.1 billion from the office of the former NSA.

Former SSA to President Goodluck Jonathan, Dudafa Waripamo-Owei

On trial, over N830 million allegedly kept in accounts of four different companies.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s Cousin Robert Azibaola

On Thursday, a Federal High Court ruled that he has a case to answer for allegedly collecting $40 million from the office of former NSA.

The decision by the APC-led government to reveal the names of the alleged looters and the funds allegedly stolen is in response to the opposition party, PDP’s, challenge to the government to name those alleged to have looted the country and destroyed the economy.

Mohammed said this list is just a tip of the iceberg, and the APC did not make these cases up as some of them currently have cases in court.

“They are in court and the records are available. Some of the people on this list are seeking to plea bargain, and that is a fact.

“We insist that Nigeria was looted blind under the watch of the PDP and that the starting point in tendering an apology is for them to return the loot,” he said.

Mohammed said further that the APC will not stop talking about the alleged looting by the PDP.

“We will not stop talking about the massive looting by the PDP. They brought Nigeria to this sorry pass. We are now looking around for loans to build infrastructure, and they ask us not to talk about it. We will talk about it,” he said.

The Ekiti Government says it has paid N400 million as compensation to those affected by the ongoing demolition exercise in the state.
The State Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Tayelolu Otitoju disclosed this during a press conference in Ado-Ekiti on Friday.
Otitoju explained that government’s action on the demolition was not to deliberately render residents homeless, and thereby make life difficult for them, as being insinuated.
He said that the exercise was part of the Urban Renewal programme of the present administration, aimed at giving Ado Ekiti, the state capital and other major towns a facelift that would make it wear the toga of a real state capital.
The beneficiaries received between N100,000 to N2 million as compensation, depending on the nature and size of the structure because, some of them were either built with mud while others were modern houses.
The Commissioner disclosed that more than 300 houses had so far been demolished under the exercise in Ado Ekiti, Ikere Ekiti, Efon Alaaye, Omuo Ekiti, Ise Ekiti, Emure Ekiti and Ijero Ekiti, among others.
He said the relatively high number of houses demolished by the present administration was as a result of the rapid development going on in the state.
He emphasised the level of development witnessed in the state in the last three and a half years adding that it was a confirmation of the determination of Governor Fayose to improve the lot of the people.
Otitoju said that government embarked on the project to ease traffic congestion and adhere to urban policy of any civilized society.
The Commissioner, however announced that government would not compensate owners of demolished houses that were built on waterways noting that the recalcitrant property owners had treated several government notices of contravention with disdain.
He warned developers in the state against further construction without approved building plan and enjoined interested developers to henceforth avail themselves with the status of any plot of land before the purchase.
He added that necessary title deeds must first be obtained from the Ministry before commencing construction in order to prevent avoidable embarrassment in future. LR News

Alexander Zverev

Fourth seed Alexander Zverev overcame a slow start on Thursday to wear down Borna Coric 6-4 6-4 and set up a Miami Open semi-final against Pablo Carreno Busta, who earlier defeated Kevin Anderson.
After a power failure delayed the start of the match by more than an hour, Zverev faced two break points in the second game but then settled down and took command.
One break in each set was enough for the German to clinch his first win in three career attempts against the Croat.
Zverev advances to a Friday semi-final against Spanish 16th seed Carreno Busta, who survived a match point to upset South African sixth seed Anderson 6-4 5-7 7-6(6).
The other semi-final pits Argentine fifth seed Juan Martin del Potro against American 14th seed John Isner.
Zverev did not use the power failure as an excuse for his slow start.
“I didn’t particularly care,” he said, adding that he spent the time watching an NBA game on a locker room television.
“I think I lost the first six points of the match. It wasn’t the best start. I’m just happy to get through.”
For Carreno Busta, who arrived on court in fine form having dropped only 12 games over his previous tee matches, the win was his first in five meetings against Anderson and avenged his fourth-round Indian Wells loss to the world number eight.
“It was an amazing match, no?” Carreno Busta said.
“He played some unbelievable points, passing shots.
“I lost to him, 7-6 in the third set (at Indian Wells). And today, well, at the beginning of the match I started playing really good, returning good, serving good, being very aggressive.”
Anderson saved a pair of match points in the second set and shifted momentum in his favor but Carreno Busta, seeded 16th at Crandon Park, regrouped in the decider where the two players stayed on serve until the tiebreak.
Carreno Busta was staring at defeat when 6-5 down in the tiebreak but was let off the hook when Anderson missed with a forehand.
From there the South African pushed a backhand volley wide and then mishit a second serve that handed the win to Carreno Busta after two hours, 42 minutes.
Anderson, whose year already includes an ATP Tour title at the New York Open and runner-up finishes in Acapulco and Pune, has now lost all 10 of his quarter-final matches at the Masters 1000 level – the highest-tiered tournaments after the four grand slams.

Lagos residents trekking to their destinations

Lagos residents heading for their workplaces and other destinations on Thursday were stranded after the state government blocked some major roads over the visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to the state.

Latest Reality Metro learnt that among some of the areas affected were Iyana Ipaja, Ikeja, Maryland, Iyana Oworo, Airport Road, among others.

Our correspondent gathered that many commuters were forced to trek for hours due to absence of vehicles, while residents travelling out of the country trekked with their luggage to the airport.

A resident, Ayodeji Iyanu, said he trekked from Iyana Ipaja to Ladipo, Oshodi.

Iyanu, who shared his experience on Twitter, accused the police, who manned the blocked roads, of eye service.

Another resident, Ayoade Rufus, who spoke on a traffic platform, Gidi_Traffic, said the Victoria Island area was also affected.

“Outer Marina (was) barricaded from Odulami Junction. People are trekking to Victoria Island. Walking for Mohammadu Buhari was voluntary. Now it’s compulsory,” he wrote.

A motorist, Tony Bekederemo, said he spent about three hours driving a short distance.
“I spent two hours and 43 minutes driving from Apongbon to CMS. Lagos na wa o,” he said.
A popular Twitter user and self-acclaimed adviser of the state governor, with the alias, Lagos Class Captain, said he trekked from Sango, Ogun State to Mangoro, Ikeja area of Lagos.

“Hello Sir, Akinwunmi Ambode, this morning I have trekked from Sango to Mangoro because Say-Baba is coming to open bus stop in Lagos. Is it fair like that? Sir, there’s pandemonium everywhere. Please help,” he wrote.

One Davizs said a lot of damage had been caused by the shutdown of Lagos roads.
He said, “You have actually ruined a lot today (Thursday) dear Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for so called opening. By closing the roads, business (was) closed, funds lost, tickets wasted, flight missed, plans trashed, and more. Just because you want to please our President, a city was displeased.”

Also, one Seun, condemned the action of the state government.

He said, “An example of a dysfunctional state goverment is blocking all access roads to your three airport terminals because someone wants to commission a bus terminal/ bus stop in 2018 – a project of a local government chairman. Mega city my foot!”

One IK Mosina recalled that a similar lockdown occurred in the state during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He said, “It’s quite shameful that what was totally condemned by the government of Lagos State during GEJ’s visit to the state still happened during the man called Mr. Better. Who is deceiving who?  I am not a GEJ fan, neither am I a member of any political party. But I hate people doing what they condemn others for; hypocrisy of the highest order.”

The experience made some rights organisations, activists and celebrities to call out the state government.

A civil society group, Enough is Enough Nigeria, said shutting down the state over Buhari’s visit could not be justified.

“The decision to shut down a commercial city like Lagos is totally unreasonable and unnecessary. How many cities in the world are shut down due to a presidential visit? Lagosians deserve better!” it said.

Founder, Stanbic IBTC, Atedo Peterside, described the development as unfortunate.

“Today’s Lagos road closures are totally unnecessary and unfortunate. In the 21st century, nobody closes down a mega city. The President and governors should simply have used helicopters. No right thinking person will close down New York or London or even Sydney,” he tweeted.

As of 8pm, Peterside’s post had generated 131 comments and 1,400 retweets.
A former Minister of Education and frontline activist of the #BringBackOurGirls campaign, Oby Ezekwezili, wondered why the state government declared a public holiday over the presidential visit.

She retweeted a post by one Editi Effiòng, who put up a picture of stranded residents trekking on a long stretch of road.

“It’s all about perspective. If you see today as inter-house sports or a state-wide fitness day, the trekking will make sense!” the post said.

There were also videos of some residents trekking to their airport with their luggage.

A Lagos-based publisher, Dele Momodu, also expressed his displeasure.

“Lagos is already on lockdown just because our President is visiting us today. There should be other convenient ways of doing this,” he said.

The 2015 Presidential Candidate of KOWA Party, Remi Sonaiya, faulted the invitation of Buhari to inaugurate the terminal.

She said, “If the new Ikeja Bus Terminal had to be opened, the Ikeja Local Government Chairman could easily have done it. But the President! Just like magistrates gathered in Yaba to inaugurate an inverter. Let’s stop this farce, for God’s sake and get down to serious work.”

However, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Chike Oti, in a statement around 8.30am on Thursday, said all roads in the state were opened to both human and vehicular traffic.

He assured residents of adequate security during and after the President’s visit.

Oti could not be reached for comment on the harrowing experiences of residents as of press time.

Lawmaker representing Yobe State, Senator Buka Abba-Ibrahim, has said that serious negotiations are ongoing for the release of Leah Sharibu and the remaining Chibok School Girls abducted by the Boko Haram.

The Lawmaker revealed this in a point of order on Thursday at plenary.

Leah Sharibu is one of more than a hundred Dapchi schoolgirls that were abducted by the Boko Haram on February 19, 2018, in Yobe State.

Five of her colleagues died in captivity while 104 others were released on March 21, 2018, but she was held back in captivity for allegedly refusing to denounce her Christian faith.

On Thursday Senator Ibrahim told his colleagues, who called for Sharibu’s release, that serious talks were ongoing for her release.

He described the situation as unfortunate, more so as it appears that she would spend Easter in captivity rather than with her family.

There have been calls from different groups for her release more than a month after she was snatched from school. LR News

Zambian opposiiton Nevers Mumba,and wife

Mr. Nevers Mumba, Zambian opposition party leader, has been jailed for three months for gaining access to the country’s state broadcaster by lying to a police officer.
Lusaka magistrates David Simusamba found the former televangelist guilty of one offence of giving false information to a public officer.
He, however, acquitted him of criminal trespass into the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC).
Mumba was accused of having given false information to a police officer that he had an appointment with an editor of ZNBC.
In the second count, he was accused of trespassing into ZNBC with intent to annoy staff.
Mr Simusamba said Mumba was a former vice-president who should have refrained from acting in a reckless manner.
The magistrate said he had also put into account the fact that Mumba committed the offence in a political environment.
On September 8, 2016, Mumba was said to have unlawfully entered ZNBC newsroom with intent to intimidate and annoy the staff.
He was protesting over a story which was aired concerning the presidential hearing.
President Edgar Lungu, who was for the second time elected in 2016, has been accused of clamping down on dissent.
The opposition condemned the conviction.
Main opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema tweeted saying: “Our brother Nevers Mumba has been convicted for three months for simply visiting ZNBC. This must stop.”
Meanwhile, there was commotion at the Lusaka Magistrates Court as ailing opposition NDC leader Chishimba Kambwili sought bail for the graft case he was facing.
While the hullabaloo to process his bail was playing out, Mr Kambwili, 50, recently from a hospital, was reported to have collapsed as he waited in the holding cell.
As his supporters pushed to rush him to the hospital, police would not have any of those requests resulting in a bitter exchange of words, with some supporters openly wailing while he lay motionless in the vehicle.
Mr Hichilema called the treatment by police “brutal’.

IGP, Idris Ibrahim & Kogi CP, Ali Jang

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has removed the Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, Mr Ali Janga, following a jailbreak in the state.

Mr Idris announced this in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, on Monday in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The decision comes hours after Mr Janga announced that six suspects, including two men who accused Senator Dino Melaye of supplying their arms, escaped from police custody in Lokoja, the state capital.

However, the lawmaker has since denied the allegations and described them as attempts to silence him.

In further reaction to the jailbreak, the police boss redeployed the Commander of Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) in Kogi for negligence, dereliction of duty and gross misconduct.

He also redeployed the Divisional Police Officer ‘A’ Division, Lokoja, where the suspects escaped, and other police officers implicated in the escape for the same offence.

He consequently directed the Commissioner of Police, Federal Operations at the Force Headquarters, Mr Esa Ogbu, to immediately proceed and take over as the new police commissioner in Kogi.

Furthermore, the IGP’s Intelligence Response Team and Special Tactical Squad, as well as personnel of the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department have already arrived in the state on the order of the police boss.

They have been directed to work with the State Command to re-arrest the escaped suspects and carry out a detailed investigation into the escape and bring all those involved to justice.

The police urged residents of the state to remain calm and assist the command with useful information to apprehend the escaped suspects.

Senator Dino Melaye has threatened to sue the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris over the reported escape of two suspects who accused him (Melaye) of being their sponsor and gun supplier.
Melaye who spoke on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday, cited Order 43 to submit that the police had either released the suspects or killed them.
He therefore said that the Police must produce the suspects dead or alive or he would sue the Police IG for intimidation, abuse of power, harrasment and mental assault.
On March 20, the Nigerian Police paraded the suspects allegedly working for Melaye. The thugs were caught with two AK-47 and five pump action guns.
The suspects were billed to be arraigned on Wednesday.
However, in a dramatic turn of events, the Police in Lokoja announced on Wednesday that the supects along with four others escaped following a jail break.
The Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Mr Ali Janga said at a press conference in Lokoja that the two suspects ; Kabiru Seidu alias Osama and Nuhu Salisu alias Small escaped at about 3:21 am at the A Police Division in Lokoja where they were being kept in lawful custody.
According to the Commissioner, four other suspects escaped along with Seidu and Salisu, bringing the total number of fleeing suspects to six.
Both Seidu and Salisu escaped in the early hours of Wednesday, a day they were supposed to be arraigned before a Lokoja Federal high court alongside Melaye and Mr Mohammed Audu who was also named by the suspects as their sponsor.
The four other suspects that escaped include Aliyu Isa, Adams Suleiman, Emmanuel Audu and Musa Mohammed.
The police Commissioner said that 13 policemen, comprising five operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and eight conventional policemen on duty when the incident happened have been detained for interrogation.
“The 13 police officers who were on duty when the incident occurred were defaulted and detained for interrogation,” he said.
Janga also stated that the names of the six fleeing suspects and that of Dino Melaye and Mohammed Audu had been sent for watch listing by the Interpol for immediate arrest anywhere they are found.
He appealed to residents to assist the police with useful information on the whereabouts of the suspects by reporting to the nearest police station.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has decried the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the Africa Continental Free Trade Area agreement, expressing hope that he will change his mind before it is too late.

Obasanjo poured out his mind on the AfCFTA during a presidential panel, titled: ‘When Leaders Make History’ at the Africa CEO Forum in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire on Tuesday. He was joined by the President of Zimbabwe, Emerson Mnangagwa.

Obasanjo said, “That President Buhari didn’t sign the free trade agreement in Kigali is disappointing; I hope he signs it before it is too late.

“Egypt started the discussion on the formation of the Organisation of African Unity but didn’t conclude it and Nigeria took over. Nigeria was also central to the discussion of the free trade agreement, but I am surprised that the country withdrew from signing.”

The AfCFTA treaty is one of the flagship projects of the African Union Agenda 2063, and is aimed at creating a single continental market for goods and services, with free movement of business persons, investments and a single currency.

Also, the agreement commits countries to removing tariffs on 90 per cent of goods and to liberalise services, while items identified as sensitive, which make up the balance 10 per cent, will also be phased out later as tariff-free.

But the President, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Dr. Frank Jacobs, said the government’s enforcement mechanism in the area of enforcement of rules of origin needed to be clearly defined before local producers could support the agreement.

It is believed that the AfCFTA treaty would improve intra-African trade and enhance economic growth and sustainable development.

The Federal Government had delayed the signing of the treaty to allow for more deliberations and input from stakeholders and had set up a committee on the issue before the President would sign the treaty.

Speaking on the need for increased youth and women participation in politics in Africa, Obasanjo, who zeroed in on Nigeria, stated, “In our own part of the world, we have not done enough in this regard. Since independence, we have never had any woman as president and VP; no woman has contested governorship election and won.

“In the coming dispensation, all organs of political parties should have 30 per cent slots for women, 30 per cent for the youth, and 40 per cent for the others.”

He said it was disheartening that the number of the women in the National Assembly was still very insignificant. LR News

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue has met with President Muhammadu Buhari over the plight of more 175,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs ) in the eight camps created on the state ravaged by herders’ menace..
The governor said that the IDPs “ have expressed their desire to go back home’’ .
The governor stated that Buhari was “very passionate’’ about the plight of the IDPs and had assured him that federal government would swing into action to ensure their full rehabilitation.
“It is quite assuring that it will be well and I want to thank the President for the support he has shown. I know that this crisis did not just start during his tenure, it precedes this government.’’
The governor said that he also reminded Buhari of the promise he made to the people of the state and assured Nigerians that they remained committed to a united Nigeria.
He said that the state would continue to partner with the Federal Government to ensure peaceful co-existence in the state and the country as a whole.
Ortom stated this when he briefed State House correspondents after a closed door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday.
The governor, who disclosed that he was in the villa to thank the President for the condolence visit he paid to Benue State after the recent killings in the state, said he also intimated him of socio-economic situation in the state.
“I also reminded him about the request of Benue people when he paid that visit and to assure him that Benue remains committed to a united Nigeria and to work with him in ensuring that we collaborate with the Federal Government to provide security for lives and property in Nigeria.
“When I was serving as minister, my ancestral home was destroyed, 53 people were killed and this was in 2013 when Mr. President was not yet here.
“But I think that what is important is the NEC sub-committee headed by the Vice President which is doing the needful.
“I believe that the meeting we held and the subsequent ones that we are going to hold will definitely proffer a solution to this perennial problem and we sought it out ones and for all.
“But we remain committed to our people and our ranching law and I believe that is the way forward.’’
He emphasized that Nigeria must adopt global best practices and modern ways of animal husbandry so as to check the persistent farmers/herdsmen clashes across the country.
According to the governor, this has become necessary in view of the fact that the over 20 million cattle in Nigeria cannot cope with open grazing.
“There is no doubt about that and a solution has to be created just as it is done in India with over 300 million herds of cattle, in Brazil 250 million herds of cattle and in America 300 million but yet, there has not been clashes like we have witnessed in Nigeria with just 20 million cattle.
“And I think that for us in Benue, we are winning because even Miyetti Allah has accepted that truly, ranching remains the best option.
“And we commend them and we will work with them to see how our law can wear human face to ensure that we have a win-win for all.
“And you will recall that the issue of cattle rustling is very major problem to the cattle rearers in Nigeria.
“Ranching will minimize this problem in Nigeria; it will minimize attacks on farms and encroachment on farms. So, we encourage everyone to work with us to ensure that we achieve this,’’ he added.
Ortom reassured that his administration would continue to collaborate with security agencies to check the activities of militia groups in the state.
On recent comment by former minister of defence, retired Gen. T. Y. Danjuma that people should defend themselves from possible attacks by aggressors, the governor said Danjuma was misrepresented.
“I’m not sure that if listened to him very well. It is a misrepresentation of what the former minister said.
“He did not tell anybody to take up arms. He only said that people should protect themselves.
“Of course, you know that self-preservation is the first law of nature.
“You can’t just wait in your house and allow someone to come and kill you. You can resist the person, but you don’t necessarily need to have arms. I think that was what the minister was saying.
“There is need for people to arise to defend themselves not necessarily using weapons that are banned. You can use a stick and disarm someone.
“Some years ago, I was able to disarm armed robbers with seven AK 47 without anything. I think that is the kind of thing he is trying to say. Nigerians should rise up to do this.
“Security matters are not just left in the hands of security men, it requires every one of us to put our heads together and be courageous to be able to surmount it,’’ he added.
The governor also dismissed the insinuation that he had strained relationship with President Buhari and the APC-led federal government.
He, however, acknowledged that he had “not so good’’ relationship with some heads of security agencies occasioned by the recent happenings in Benue.
Ortom said: “ Benue people first before any other thing. I have not had any strained relationship with the federal government.
“I had strained relationship with security agencies Head not even with security agencies and that was the point I was making.
“But all I was saying is trying to add value to the security of the nation by bringing my suggestions as a former local government chairman, former minister and now current serving governor.
“I think I have something to add to the security architecture of this country that can add value and help us to do better than we are doing.
“There is always room for improvement in any setting or organisation by buying from one person to the other because nobody has monopoly of knowledge.
“And people must be willing to accept pieces of advice especially superior opinions that can help shape and add value to the development of our system.’’ LR News

Commercial motorcycles operators are also urged to stay away from the prohibited roads.

“Whoever is also found as a passenger will also be arrested and prosecuted so do not patronise these Okadas on these prohibited routes not only for the purpose of the visit but also to ensure that Lagos State Laws on the regulation of commercial motorbikes are obeyed at all times,” Edgal said.
